only your friends list will see friends only uploads, but anyone can see the private ones, if they are given the link.. they just don't display publicly and can't be added to groups etc

Friends can see a “friends only” profile; no one but the owner has ANY access to a “private” account, not even DMs. That setting really should be eliminated.
